Life Isn’t Fair

By Ron Patterson

Copyright© 2000

Life isn’t fair like we’d like it to be

It’s full of heartache and pain

Oh, there are times of laughter and glee

Even as there’s sunshine and rain

Whoever said there’s a guarantee

That every day would have sun

And just like flowers attract the bees

When it’s expected least you’ll be stung

No single thing lasts forever

And you can bet there’s no guarantee

Right after always comes never

Life isn’t fair like we’d like it to be

Pain Is My Constant Companion

 By Ron Patterson

Copyright© 2000

Pain is my constant companion

Both in my body and soul

At night when the world is sleeping

I’m awake with my pain all alone

Think of a sky void of stars

Imagine a room without light

Think of a life without vision

The emptiness of a long lonely night

A life with no one to hold me

A place all alone, dark and cold

Imagine a life stripped of beauty

And no one to touch or to hold

I’m in that place without sunshine

Where warm summer nights don’t exist

My life is a long endless winter

Constantly dreary and cold

I long for summer’s warm sunshine

Gentle breezes to soothe my soul

Someone special to love and hold me

When the pain is too much to bear

 Pain is my constant companion

And my heart has a permanent tear

My battle:

Unending Pain

By Ron Patterson

Copyright© 2001

He who suffers pain day and night

Yearns for each new day’s warm sun

For the night is a sea of loneliness

All engulfing and so unforgiving

Time seems to stand unbearably still

Every minute a torrent of rising tide

An exhausting battle of the will to endure

As the sea lashes forth with gaping mouth

The cold darkness of lingering night

A constant reminder of death and doom

As the morning sun begins its ascension

And the veil of darkness is replaced by light

Thoughts are focused on the labor at hand

The even more painful act of rising to face the day

There is no escaping the constant agony

The ravenous bite of pain’s ever gripping jaws

The battle rages on in spite of weakened spirit

And the day’s tasks serve to diminish the unending pain

A few short naps restore the spirit and soothe the soul

For yet another veil of darkness looms beyond day

This is an unforgiving vicious cycle

An unrelenting battle against unending pain
